Being an ICT Student

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a force that has changed many aspects of the way we live. If one was to compare such fields as medicine, tourism, travel, business, law,
banking, engineering and architecture, the impact of ICT across the past two or three decades has
been enormous. The way these fields operate today is vastly different from the ways they
operated in the past. But when one looks at education, there seems to have been an uncanny lack
of influence and far less change than other fields have experienced. A number of people have
attempted to explore this lack of activity and influence.
Just as technology is influencing and supporting what is being learned in schools and universities, so too is it supporting changes to the way students are learning. Moves from content-centred curricula to competency-based curricula are associated with moves away from teacher-centred
forms of delivery to student-centred forms. Through technology-facilitated approaches,
contemporary learning settings now encourage students to take responsibility for their own
learning .In the past students have become very comfortable to learning through transmissive
modes. Students have been trained to let others present to them the information that forms the
curriculum. The growing use of ICT as an instructional medium is changing and will likely
continue to change many of the strategies employed by both teachers and students in the learning
process. The following sections describe particular forms of learning that are gaining
prominence in universities and schools worldwide.
Technology has the capacity to promote and encourage the transformation of education from a
very teacher directed enterprise to one which supports more student-centred models. Evidence of
this today is manifested in the proliferation of capability, competency and outcomes focused curricula,  moves towards problem-based learning, increased use of the Web as an information source, Internet users are able to choose the experts from whom they will learn.
The use of ICT in educational settings, by itself acts as a catalyst for change in this domain. ICTs
by their very nature are tools that encourage and support independent learning. Students using
ICTs for learning purposes become immersed in the process of learning and as more and more
students use computers as information sources and cognitive tools, the influence of the technology on supporting how students learn will continue to increase.

My Future Plans

By this title, I am guessing most of you are thinking what you will be doing next weekend or even tomorrow. You would be expecting me to write that I’m going to get ‘locked’ with my friends, but no! I hope to remember what I did the next day or even in a few years time. I want to be able to say when I’m old, that I lived my life to the fullest.
Firstly, this summer, I don’t want to waste it like I did every other summer. I don’t want to sleep all day. I want to live, I want to visit museums, go to the cinema, do things I’ve never done before just for the sake of doing it. I want to visit fungi the dolphin. I want to make friends with a random stranger, I want to chat up a granny and ask her to dance with me, who knows I may even get a kiss. I want to climb a mountain. I want to live. And when I die I want to see what a life I have lived. I want to live, but not only to live, I want to love. I want to have fun with a maiden, meet her parents. I want to get in trouble with her dad for kissing her in public. I want to live, I want to love and I want to be happy.
Then when summer ends, I want to go to college. I hope to go to college in Manila. New fun, new faces, new things to do, I want to explore our world. On a whim, I will get on a bus, not knowing where I’m going or for how long and see what happens. See new places, and try new foods.
When I do finally settle down, I don’t want to have to work some dead end job in a cubicle, not getting to see anybody. I want to be out there talking to the people, laughing with the people, being one of those people.
I don’t want to just be making up the numbers, I want to be number one, I want to lead from the front, I want to save a life or two, I want to make a difference. I am sure most of you think I’m a bit fanatical but I could not bear doing the same thing day-in day-out, just filing numbers into a computer, I would prefer to saw off my left arm than work for the ‘man’ as so many hippies have talked about. My reasons are different however. I don’t care if a multi-million dollar corporation makes a bit more profit or not. It’s just that people who work for the ‘man’ tend to be as stimulating as a plank of wood. I want to jump from planes for a living. I want to do something interesting and exhilarating. I want to save a woman from a burning building. If I find a woman I like, who likes me, I don’t want to have to slow down. If she could keep up with me, great, and if she pushed me further, then even better.
I don’t want to die young but I don’t want to die old after having ‘lived’ a boring life.
When I die and my life flashes before my eyes, I want to be happy with what I did with myself
I want to live…

New Year, New Attitudes, New Me

                  New Year!!! New me!!!
Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012. It is already New Year. We can’t deny that we have made some resolutions for this New Year. Maybe, we have already decided to do or stop doing something.
In some dictionaries, New Year is defined as the first day or first few days of a calendar year. All of us know that is widely celebrated all over the world as a public holiday, January 1.
I considered 2012 as a lucky year for me. I considered it as a time for a fresh start. I decided to change something in myself especially my attitudes and even my looks. Last year, I noticed that I became so lazy in doing my works and responsibilities. I became addicted to computer games. I became irresponsible. Now, I want that these attitudes will now be changed. I want a new Dean. I want to change for the betterment of myself. I want to be more responsible this year.
I promised to myself that I will do everything just to fulfill my goals. I can do whatever others can do. I can change myself.

Keeping in Mind my Mother Tongue

                Ilokano nak!!!
Ilocano is an Austronesian language of the Philippine type spoken by about ten million people. It is a member of the Cordilleran language family which comprises the languages of the Northern Luzon.
We should be proud of our mother tongue. In our country, it has been called the “National Language of the North.”  Many ethnic groups from the northern regions of our country use Ilocano as their dialect instead of the national language of our country which is Tagalog or Pilipino. Ilocano remains a regional language with no political power or use in education past the early elementary years.
Nowadays, it is noticeable that some of us prefer to use English or Tagalog. We should bear in mind that the Ilocano dialect is our mother tongue. We should use it. We should be proud of it. We should love and respect our own dialect.
Let’s be one. Let us keep in our minds that pur mother tongue, Ilocano, is essential in fulfilling our goals in life.

The Essence of Christmas

“Ang pasko ay sumapit. Tayo ay mangagsiawit ng magagandang himig dahil sa Diyos ay pag-ibig. Nang si Kristo ay isilang. May tatlong haring nagsidalaw at ang bawat isa ay nagsipaghandog ng tanging alay. Bagong taon ay magbagong buhay ng lumigaya ang ating bayan. Tayo ay magsikap upang makamtan natin ang kasaganaan.”
Christmas is fast approaching. It is the birth of our Dear Jesus.
We cannot deny that materialism has already diminished the real essence of Christmas. We cannot deny that Christmas has been trivialized into Santa Claus, his reindeers, Christmas lights and trees and lots of toys and goodies to bring cheer to humankind on this festive holiday season.
It is nice to say that most of the Filipinos value the spirit and traditions of Christmas. We still look at Christmas as a period of preparing for the coming of God into the Earth by transforming himself into a human being.
As we approach the actual coming of our Savior, let us reflect how we have, individually and collectively, been preparing ourselves in mind, body and spirit, for this joyful and spiritually reinvigorating moment in our predominantly Catholic nation. Have we allowed ourselves to be fooled by the lies, deceptions and machinations of power, material wealth, influence and even the pride of being more smart and knowledgeable than our fellowmen?
Let us love our neighbors. Let us forgive those people who have sinned to us. Let us help the poor. Let us shower the world with love and happiness. Let us all humble ourselves in the eyes of God just as His Son Jesus came into our lives.
